Evaluate Under Ground Storage Tank leakage and coordinate clean up of tank.

In response to a new underground storage tank regulation, Westlectric Castings, Inc., pulled their gasoline tank anticipating refilling the hole and receiving closure from the lead agency. The soil investigation revealed several thousand gallons had leaked and contaminated the soil approximately 40 feet deep. Regulations required that clean up activities begin immediately.

Justice & Associates was contracted to evaluate the underground storage tank leakage at the Westlectric facility and determine the best and most cost effective procedures for remediating the site. The facility had attempted, on their own, to identify and proceed with remediation and learned that the project was estimated to cost $1,000,000.
Justice & Associates' conclusion was to install a vapor extraction system which removed volatile gases from the soil to a depth of approximately 40 feet. These gases were then used as fuel for a small internal combustion engine which was used as a mechanism to destroy the VOCs.
New technology was applied which resulted in exhaust gases from the engine being pumped back into the ground to heat the soil to speed up vaporization of the VOCs trapped below the surface.
This project was conducted over a three year period and in 1995 received a closure certification from the Regional Water Quality Control Board.
